With over 9.6 lakh commuters, Bengaluru Metro recorded its highest-ever single day ridership on June 4, as thousands flooded the central areas in the city to join the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory celebrations.
According to a release from the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), ridership across both metro lines saw an almost three-fold increase. The Purple line metro running from Challaghatta in the southwest to Whitefield (Kadugodi) in the east saw over 4.7 lakh passengers. Meanwhile, the Green line that connects Madavara in the northwest to Silk Institute in the south saw over 2.8 lakh passengers.
The Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Metro Station at Majestic that connects both lines recorded a substantial footfall of 2,03,724 commuters.
In the statement, the company also said that the major driver of this surge was the passenger movement at Central Business District (CBD) stations, including Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha, MG Road, and Sir M Visvesvaraya.
The new record was posted at a time when there were rising concerns regarding falling ridership due to price hikes. Post the price hike, ridership fell by nearly 16 per cent from January to February, per BMRCL data accessed by businessline. BMRCL had capped the price hike at 70 per cent after commuter backlash.
Previously, Bengaluru metro recorded its highest-ever daily footfall on April 17 this year, with a total of 9,08,153 boardings.
