The Maharashtra government has rolled out plans to have eight charging facilities installed on the busy Pune-Mumbai Expressway for the best electric mobility.

Promoting green travel practices and electric mobility, the Maharashtra government on Monday, September 1, announced that the busy Pune-Mumbai Expressway will have eight charging stations installed for EV owners. The move signals the government’s push towards eco-friendly travel on the expressway, with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) directed to carry out the project.
The MSRDC will soon begin surveys of various sites on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and identify spots suitable to build such charging stations along the route spanning 94 kilometres. Each of the eight charging stations in the plans will boast of advanced infrastructure, where multiple electric vehicles can be charged simultaneously.
Eight Charging Stations For EV Users On Pune-Mumbai Expressway
The authorities’ step will help reduce the challenge and range anxiety experienced by EV owners and make it easier to travel between the two popular cities. “The growing number of EVs on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway makes it necessary to provide charging infrastructure. These stations will encourage more people to switch to electric mobility without worrying about charging on long journeys,” said Rajesh Patil, the joint managing director of MSRDC in a statement.
Among the busiest highways in India, the Pune-Mumbai Expressway carries lakhs of vehicles every day. It was built to ease the intercity travel for locals and tourists. However, many EV owners have experienced issues on the road due to the absence of adequate fast-charging points. The Maharashtra government’s move to install eight charging stations will thus prove to be a game-changer for private EV owners and fleet operators on the extended stretch.
Locations To Be Selected Strategically
According to the officials, the eight locations for these charging facilities will be selected strategically to ensure even coverage of the stretch for electric vehicles, prioritising travellers’ convenience and road safety. Once made operational, these charging facilities are also expected to raise the electric vehicle mobility on the expressway and encourage a wider set of state travellers to adopt the electric vehicles, curbing pollution amidst a variety of climate-based challenges faced by the country today.
