The government has developed a major plan to alleviate traffic congestion in Mumbai. A 1.5-km-long, six-lane elevated road will be constructed to connect the entry/exit point of the coastal road at Haji Ali to Senapati Bapat Marg, heading towards Parel. The estimated cost of this project is between Rs 250 and Rs 300 crore.

This new bridge is expected to significantly enhance the east–west connectivity of the city. Notably, there will be no need for land acquisition, and construction will not disrupt ongoing traffic.

Once built, the bridge will allow commuters from densely populated areas such as Dadar, Parel, Matunga, and Mahim to reach the coastal road at Haji Ali Junction within minutes. Currently, passengers travelling from Haji Ali to Parel must take several roundabout routes, including Worli Naka, NE Besant Road, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, and Dr E. Moses Road. These long detours waste both time and fuel.

Bridge to Bypass Major Landmarks

The proposed bridge will run alongside the Mahalaxmi Race Course, pass near the NSCI Dome, and land at the Dr E. Moses Road end of Senapati Bapat Marg. From there, commuters can easily access major roads such as Gokhale Road, Bhavani Shankar Road, Lady Jamshed Road, and NM Joshi Marg. This will greatly improve connectivity to important areas like Siddhivinayak Temple, Shivaji Park, Lower Parel, and Mahim.

No Traffic Disruptions During Construction

According to officials from the Urban Development Department, the project requires no land acquisition and will not disturb existing traffic during construction. This is seen as a major relief for the public.

The project was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who described it as a “transformative step” for Mumbai’s infrastructure. He said the bridge is not just another flyover but a vital move towards freeing the city from chronic traffic jams. This signal-free corridor aims to make daily travel faster, safer, and more efficient.

Awaiting Implementation Agency

While the implementing agency has not yet been finalised, there is strong enthusiasm among government officials and the public alike. Since the project neither requires relocation nor affects private properties, it has garnered widespread support. If executed on schedule, this plan could prove to be a game-changer in addressing Mumbai’s long-standing traffic issues.
