Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy, along with engineers and consultants, inspected the Metro corridors to Medchal and Shamirpet recently.
The inspection was focused on addressing technical issues related to the alignment as per the Financial Express.
The Metro route from Paradise to Bowenpally faces difficulties due to sharp curves near the airport boundary. To tackle this, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) plans an elevated corridor that will pass beneath the Begumpet Airport runway through a 600-metre tunnel.
This requires the Metro to drop to tunnel level and then rise again, creating complex engineering challenges.
To streamline the project and create an integrated Metro hub at JBS, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy suggested that HAML explore the option of combining the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet corridors initially, before separating them later. Acting on this, Reddy and his team surveyed various roads in the Cantonment area to find the best possible Metro alignment.
The team checked various roads, including:
- JBS-Secunderabad Club Road
- Staff Road (Picket KV School Road)
- Mudfort Road
- Tivoli Junction Road
- Diamond Point Junction-Centre Point Junction-Hasmathpet Junction-Bowenpally Road
- Tadbund-Anjaneya Swamy Temple Road
- Tadbund Junction-Airport Office Junction-Bowenpally Check-Post Road
The inspection revealed that joining the Metro corridors at JBS could help avoid the tunnel under the airport, simplifying the engineering process. The proposed route would join the NH junction near Sarojini Pulla Reddy bungalow road, where Metro pillars and viaducts could be built along the widened service road median without disturbing the ongoing NH flyover work.
This approach would create a seamless 60 km Metro line stretching from Medchal to the airport, passing through key areas such as JBS, MGBS, and Chandrayangutta.
JBS is set to be developed into a significant Metro hub, serving commuters from Secunderabad, northern Hyderabad, and surrounding districts in northern Telangana.
The JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridor can be directly extended from the existing first Metro pillar near Secunderabad Club. It will be a double-elevated structure built above the widened HMDA corridor on the Karimnagar Highway.
